Is It Safe to Travel There?

A direct yes or no for countries and cities, from live government advisories.

To find out whether it is safe to travel, look at the live advisory warnings for your destination and check whether regional alerts apply to the exact area you plan to visit. At Safe to Go, we track daily guidance so you can separate national caution from specific regional warnings.

Travelers most often misread the national level, when the warning is about specific regions. The US can rate a whole country at one level while the UK FCDO advises against travel to only part of it.

How Safe to Go Rates Travel Destinations

Safe to Go gathers information every day from three official public feeds to evaluate travel safety across the globe. We monitor the US Department of State travel advisories, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office foreign travel advice, and the Government of Canada travel advice and advisories.

The United States publishes four numbered ratings: Level 1 Exercise Normal Precautions, Level 2 Exercise Increased Caution, Level 3 Reconsider Travel, and Level 4 Do Not Travel. Canada applies four security tiers as well: exercise normal security precautions, exercise a high degree of caution, avoid non-essential travel, and avoid all travel. Meanwhile, the UK FCDO operates without numbers, instead explicitly naming destinations where it advises against all travel or against all but essential travel.

Our baseline rating matches the US assessment when available, while territories like Puerto Rico map from Canadian guidance. Learn more about how we rate safety across global regions, or check the latest advisory changes to see recent revisions.

Steps to Check Your Destination Before You Leave

Start by browsing every country or viewing specific city guides to locate your travel destination. Look at the live status panel on the page to see the primary advisory stance and review quoted regional warnings for specific areas.

Regional advice matters because advisories often name specific parts of a country. Before departing, check the destination page once more and work through our free travel safety checklist. If you are a US citizen, enroll the trip in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program so you receive alerts and the embassy can reach you.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to travel right now?

Check the live verdict panel at the top of your destination’s guide to see today’s official standing. The panel compiles updates from US, UK, and Canadian feeds daily so you can review current advice and identify regional warnings before booking.

Why do governments issue different travel warnings?

Each government writes its own advisory on its own scale. The United States and Canada each use four levels, while the UK FCDO names the areas it advises against all travel or all but essential travel to. The three can reach different answers for the same country, and the panel on each destination page shows all three.

Does Safe to Go publish local crime statistics?

No, Safe to Go does not publish crime rates or incident counts. Government advisories assess overall security risks for the average foreign traveler rather than compiling statistical crime records.

Can travel advisories invalidate my travel insurance?

Yes, they can. The UK FCDO specifically warns travelers that visiting a region against official government guidance may invalidate their travel insurance coverage.

Safe to Go summarizes official government travel advisories for general information. It is not legal, medical or security advice, and conditions can change faster than any page. Before you book and again before you go, read the full advisory from your own government and follow the instructions of local authorities.
